Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Gain Back Pounds Four Times Faster Than Dieters
New research indicates that people who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Individuals buying these treatments need to be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The research, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Quick Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened regain.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have come off the jabs explain a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Significant Interest
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
