European Union Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the regulations are essential to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
